Interviewausschnitt zwischen Joep van Liefland und Frank Henkel (ehemaliger Landesvorsitzender der CDU Berlin)

J.v.L: Auf einem Wahlplakat der CDU, das letztes Jahr in Berlin zu sehen waren, haben Sie für mehr Video-Technik geworben. Warum? Video hat doch schon ausgedient.

F.H.: Stimmt, Video ist bereits ausgestorben und weltweit entsorgt. Es gibt aber immer noch Kassetten, die rumliegen; Untote der heutigen Gesellschaft. Wir arbeiten an einem Wiederauferstehungsprogramm.

J.v.L: Was haben Sie vor?

F.H.: In der Zukunft sollen alle Videofilme zum neuen Leben erweckt und 3-dimensional begehbar sein, mitsamt Bildstörungen. Eine Art Jurassic Park für Videos. Die Vergangenheit wird dann zur Realität. Aus der Zukunft betrachtet, werden Videofilme so zu einem Portal, zur Geschichte der Menschheit. Wir glauben, dass dieses Modell der Wirklichkeit im Sinne von zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen, Träumen, Fantasien und Sehnsüchten näher kommt als herkömmliche staatliche oder akademische Geschichtsschreibung.

J.v.L: Sie möchten also das Alte neu beleben?

F.H.: Es geht darum, das Alte neu zu denken. In Zeiten technologischer Akzeleration ist das Neue schon veraltet, bevor es überhaupt angefangen hat. Wir leben in einem permanenten Zustand von Überalterung, den wir aber Neuerung nennen. Man kann das in der Kunst oder in der Politik gut beobachten.

J.v.L: Also keine Nostalgie?

F.H.: Keine Nostalgie, aber Programm! Wer die Vergangenheit versteht, beherrscht die Zukunft. Dabei ist Video das Urmodell aller digitaler Technologie: die Transformation der Realität zur Information und das bildliche Festhalten ihrer. Das Entscheidende dieser Technologie ist die Logistik oder Verschiebung von real-time Information in die Raum-Zeit. Man hat also eine prototypische Zeitmaschine entwickelt, ohne dies damals erkannt zu haben. Ein Wendepunkt in der Geschichte.

J.v.L: Apropos mehr Video-Technik: Wie stehen Sie zu Flachbildschirmen?

F.H.: Flachbildschirme sind großartig und außerdem äußerst praktisch. Man könnte ganze Städte damit bauen, Innen- und Außenräume, Autobahnen, Tunnel, Museen usw. Es stellt sich nur die Frage, was darauf zu sehen ist.

J.v.L: Bilder etwa?

F.H.: Wir von der Partei sind nicht interessiert an Bildern. Es gibt schon genug Bilder und Werbung im öffentlichen Raum. Wir interessieren uns für das Wesen der Bilder - der Information. Das Signal ist die Essenz. Wir stehen für Störung und kompletter Auflösung des piktorialen Materials. Man soll dies nicht mit Abstraktion verwechseln. Gleichzeitig ist uns die Rückkopplung der elektronischen Realität in die analoge wichtig. Wir bauen die Notausgänge von Morgen.

J.v.L: Wie meinen Sie das?

F.H.: Die ultimative Konsequenz von mehr Video-Technik ist die Obsoleszenz aller Materie. Das bedeutet die komplette Auflösung aller materiellen Bereiche in der Welt des Videos. Wenn am Ende diese gesellschaftliche Wandlung allumfassend ist, und alles, inklusive wir, auf riesigen VCR-Speichersysteme festgehalten sind, ist die Verbindung zu einer materiellen Welt kaum mehr herzustellen. Das Stoffliche wird dann zur neuen Utopie, und dies käme eine Umkehrung aller Werte gleich. In dieser Situation braucht man unbedingt Notausgänge um den Kontakt zur Realität, falls diese noch vorhanden ist, herzustellen. Besser man fängt gleich damit an, sie zu bauen.

Interview excerpts between Joep van Liefland and Frank Henkel (former regional chairman of the Christian Democratic Union Berlin)

J.v.L: On an election poster of the CDU which was shown last year in Berlin, you were advertising for more video technology. Why? Video has had its days.

F.H.: True, video is already extinct and disposed of worldwide. But there are still cassettes lying around; the undead of today's society. We are working on a resurrection program.

J.v.L: What are you planning?

F.H.: In the future, all video films will be brought to new life and be walked through 3-dimensional, together with image interferences. A kind of Jurassic Park for videos. The past then becomes reality. Seen from the future in this way video films become a portal, a history of humanity. We believe that this model comes closer to reality in the sense of interpersonal relationships, dreams, fantasies and longings than traditional state or academic historiography.

J.v.L: So you want to revive the old?

F.H.: It's about re-thinking the old. In times of technological acceleration, the new is already outdated, before it has even begun. We are living in a permanent state of obsolescence, which we call innovation. One can observe this well in art or in politics.

J.v.L: So no nostalgia?

F.H.: No nostalgia, but program! Whoever understands the past dominates the future. Video is the master pattern of all digital technology: the transformation of reality into information and its visual capturing. The key to this technology lies in the logistics or the shift from real-time information to the space-time. Thus a prototypical time machine had been developed without having been recognized as one at the time. A turning point in history.

J.v.L: Speaking of more video technique: What do you think about flat screens?

F.H.: Flat screens are great and extremely practical. You could build whole cities with them, inside and outside spaces, highways, tunnels, museums, etc. The only question is what appears on them.

J.v.L: Pictures perhaps?

F.H.: We from the party are not interested in pictures. There are already enough pictures and advertisements in the public space. We are interested in the nature of the images – the information. The signal is the essence. We stand for perturbation and complete resolution of the pictorial material. This is not to be mistaken with abstraction. At the same time, the feedback of electronic reality into the analogue is important to us. We build the emergency exits of tomorrow.

J.v.L: What do you mean by that?

F.H.: The ultimate consequence of more video technique is the obsolescence of all matter. This means the complete resolution of all material areas in the world of video When in the end this social change is all-encompassing, and everything, including us, is held on huge VCR storage systems, the connection to a material world is hardly any longer to be established. The material then becomes the new utopia, and this would be the inversion of all values. In this situation emergency exits are essential to establish contact with reality if it is still present. Better to start building them.
