BENJAMIN ECHEVERRIA

Galerie Parisa Kind is pleased to present a series of new paintings by Los Angeles based artist Benjamin Echeverria. Developed over several months these works continue to draw upon common visual themes found in the history of abstract painting. Echeverria up cycles author-less motifs of hard edge abstraction creating a determined and unaffected surface area. When these initial paintings are disrupted and reconstituted - cut up and reassembled - variation and inconsistency become legible. “The circle and stripe paintings are like rakes, and through cycles of accumulation and loss, take on more complex dispositions.” Echeverria’s work is often held together by dissonance and tension between the components that qualify a work including titles, materials and methods of installation.

“I’ve always had an affinity for low pro graffiti and I’ve been mimicking it in my paintings for a few years. Recently I’ve been spending a lot of time in East Los Angeles, which has an abundance of unskilled graffiti, similar to what I’ve seen in metro stations near Naples and Pompeii. While driving around I found an area where people have been working out content, like just ideas, preceding any style. A lot of my practice is engaged with or in a state of becoming, and in this new body of work I’ve continued to mine for circles and stripes, but I’ve also swapped out some of the process-mediated mark making and composition building for imagery sourced from this site in East LA.”
